San Diego shooting updates: Two suspects dead after active shooter reported at Islamic center, report says

A reported active shooting threat at the Islamic Center of San Diego has been “neutralized,” according to police.

Few details are immediately available about the incident, which was reported to police around 11:40 am.

At least one person was killed in the shooting, according to the Muslim civil rights group CAIR and local news outlet KGTV, though this information is unconfirmed by police.

Two suspects are dead and no other shooters are outstanding, law enforcement sources told NBC San Diego.

Staff and law enforcement could be seen walking children out of the compound.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria wrote on X he was aware of the incident and asked the public to avoid the center.

“Please avoid the area and follow instructions from public safety officials,” he said. “We will share updates as more information becomes available.”

Members of San Diego’s Muslim community are no longer under threat, the imam of the Islamic Center of San Diego said Monday after the apparent active shooting threat earlier today.

“We are safe,” Taha Hassane said in a video statement on the center’s Facebook. “The entire school is safe. All the kids, all the staff and the teachers are safe, out of the Islamic Center.”

He did not provide further specifics about what happened, or who was targeted, though he said there were likely casualties that resulted from the security threat.

“We have [a] few casualties, not confirmed yet,” he continued. “There is no threat at this moment, but we want everyone to stay away from the Islamic Center of San Diego. We are closed for the rest of the day.”

Police are responding to reports of an active shooter near a mosque in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego on Monday.

In an update 40 minutes later, police said the scene is “still active but contained,” adding that “significant resources” had been deployed and that a reunification area had been established nearby.
